A Cornwall-based company is taking its knowledge of extreme environments into classrooms around the world. Blue Abyss, known for its work in subsea and space training and research, has launched a new education division called Blue Abyss xEd.
The first programme under the new arm saw an international team from Blue Abyss deliver a specialist lecture series in aerospace physiology to Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in the United States. The university is considered a global leader in the field.
Sven Parris, Head of Brand Engagement at Blue Abyss, said the new division is designed to give academic institutions access to immersive, real-world teaching.
“We launched the xEd service to give academic institutions access to global, experiential-based knowledge through immersive, real-world content,” said Sven.
“Our first lecture series for Case Western Reserve University was delivered by Blue Abyss’ international team of experts and covered key physiological challenges encountered in microgravity, underwater, and other mission-critical settings. It’s much more than a static curriculum; it’s about preparing students for the frontier challenges of human performance, from subsea to space, and anywhere in between. By offering flexible education models, including live or recorded lectures or hybrid delivery, we’re looking forward to supporting universities, colleges, schools, and corporate clients globally, to inspire future-ready learners.”
Blue Abyss is an affiliate member of the Cornwall Innovation Centres, which support over 150 businesses across three locations in Truro, Pool and Penryn. The company is also behind plans for what would be the world’s deepest research and development pool, right here in Cornwall.
With major infrastructure projects underway in both the UK and US, Blue Abyss believes its new education offering will help shape how the next generation of scientists, engineers, and medics learn about performance in extreme conditions.
Matt Harrington, Head of Cornwall Innovation Centres, said: “We’re proud to support forward-thinking organisations like Blue Abyss. The new education offering exemplifies how Cornwall-based innovation is making a global impact in space medicine, physiology, and advanced training. It’s inspiring to see our region contribute to such transformative education.”
